What Is Multidimensional PhotoDynamic Therapy?

PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT) harnesses the power of light to address multiple skin concerns at a cellular level. By “activating” a photosensitizing agent (Levulan) with precisely calibrated wavelengths of light, PDT selectively targets precancerous cells and acne like a “smart bomb” without harming healthy tissues. PDT not only targets existing lesions on the surface but also “sees” subclinical lesions, resulting in a “field” treatment for comprehensive skin renewal.

What makes our approach truly "Multidimensional" is Dr. Romine's pioneering protocol, maximizing outcomes of each treatment with the synergistic combination of PDT with BroadBand Light (BBL) technology, offering enhanced results and superior efficacy in lesion clearance, all while leaving the treated skin more bright and beautiful. We often refer to our MPDT as “PDT on steroids,” as the addition of the second activator (BBL) delivers improved lesion clearance along with comparable results of two BBL sessions, achieved in just a single treatment.

Ideal Candidates for Multidimensional PhotoDynamic Therapy

MPDT provides both immediate and progressive results. This advanced treatment creates meaningful change at the cellular level by eliminating damaged (precancerous and inflammatory) cells while stimulating natural renewal processes. It is ideal for anyone looking to improve the health and appearance of their skin or treat specific concerns, such as:

  • Actinic keratoses (precancerous skin changes)
  • Persistent acne
  • Sun damage and photoaging
  • Brown spots and uneven pigmentation
  • Facial redness
  • Proactive skin health maintenance

MPDT is versatile enough to address multiple concerns simultaneously. By combining MPDT with our KRMD Advanced Medical Skin Care protocols, we transform this combined medical and aesthetic treatment into a comprehensive skin rejuvenation experience.

Your Treatment Experience at BelleSante

Your BelleSante MPDT journey begins with a detailed consultation with Kristine Romine, MD, or Sara Romine, DNP, FNP-C. During this initial meeting, we'll carefully evaluate your skin concerns, perform a thorough skin exam, and review your medical history and treatment goals to develop a personalized protocol designed specifically for you. We consider factors such as your skin type, the severity of your condition, and your desired outcomes to ensure your treatment is optimally effective.

On treatment day, we begin by thoroughly cleansing your skin to remove makeup, oil and other debris. The photosensitizing solution is then carefully applied to the treatment area and allowed to sit on the skin for 30 to 45 minutes, at which time, rapidly dividing precancerous and inflammatory cells take up the Levulan, creating a “target” for the “smart bomb”.

Next comes the activation phase, where we use precisely calibrated light sources to trigger a photochemical reaction that destroys abnormal cells. Dr. Romine's innovative approach incorporates both traditional blue light activation and BroadBandLight treatment, synergistically enhancing the effectiveness of each therapy while promoting more comprehensive results. The excellent clearance of lesions as well as improving tone and clarity of skin is what sets Our signature Multidimensional PDT apart from conventional approaches, epitomizing our Mission Statement of “Partnering with patients for a Lifetime of Healthy, Beautiful Skin”.

Throughout your treatment, our team prioritizes your comfort and understanding, explaining each step to ensure you feel confident and informed. Most patients describe the sensation during treatment as warm to hot and sometimes a bit “spicy”, which is generally well-tolerated, and why patients who have experienced a significant amount of sun damage return again and again as their best solution for prevention of skin cancer and even scarring from severe acne.

Recovery & Results

Following MPDT, your skin will undergo a renewal process as it responds to the treatment. Initially, you will experience redness similar to a sunburn, along with swelling and increased sensitivity to UV light for 48 hours. This is a normal part of the healing process and indicates that the treatment is working to not only clear lesions but also to transform your skin surface.

To support optimal healing and protect your skin during this sensitive period:

  • Strictly avoid sun exposure for 48 hours following treatment
  • Wear protective clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen when outdoors
  • Follow our post-treatment care instructions, including using KRMD Advanced Medical Skin Care products to soothe and support your skin's recovery
  • Stay hydrated and maintain a gentle skincare routine until healing is complete

Over the next seven to 10 days (if face treated), or 2-3 weeks (if body areas treated), your skin will shed damaged cells and reveal fresher, healthier skin. The full benefits of treatment continue to develop over several weeks as your skin completes its renewal cycle. For most patients, a series of two to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart delivers the most dramatic results, though the specific protocol will depend on your individual needs, the severity of your condition and your skin’s response to treatment.
